C J Bates bone

Material: bone

Manufacturer and Distributor: C J Bates, Chester, CT

Seal Trademark: US trademark 44,072 1910.

C J Bates got its start in making crochet hooks when it purchased a company called Griswolds that made crochet hooks of cattle shin bone in 1865. C J Bates crochet hooks were either unbranded or privately labeled until the early 1930s. None of these in bone has been identified yet. The seal trademark may have been the earliest company branding for C J Bates. Three styles of hooks have the seal logo – style A, style B and style C as pictured below.

See Susan Bates for styles introduced after 1937.
